Interventions

Venue:

Castletown House

County:

Kildare

Dates:

13.08.2021 - 15.08.2021

Description:

Interventions is an exhibition of works resulting from a research collaboration between Marie Phelan and Audrey Walshe carried out around Castletown House in Celbridge, Co. Kildare. It explores how custodianship held over the place is manifested in a physical and cultural sense within a landscape. The work considered the motivations of the estates' former carers for change and advancement while examining how the place engages with the concerns of contemporary society. This exposed the conflicting nature of the past imperialist mindset and present ideas around ownership and the environment.

The research collaboration, from 2020, was sponsored by Kildare County Council and Creative Ireland and includes a 7-minute film in the Coach House and a site-specific botanical installation in Mrs Siddons Temple.

Marie Phelan is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores beliefs, rituals and the connection to place. She often takes aspects from the natural world and blends them with fragments of history, archaeology and mythology to create a new narrative. Using digital media, paper-based works and installation she introduces a dialogue that meditates on the crossover of past and present.

Audrey Walshe's practice revolves around botanical materials and Irish Studies. She is interested in the material culture and social history of flowers and botany and is beginning doctoral research on the documentation of bio collections in an Irish Studies context. Using a lens of decolonisation she is interested in examining the legacies of oppressive gardening practices.
