looking up at the rock of cashel chapel

Cormac's Chapel at the Rock of Cashel is one of Ireland's most important surviving medieval structures. From 2009 until 2017 the building was the focus of conservation work to help preserve the building's fabric and the fragile fresco wall paintings within. This talk will focus on this work and will be given by one of the people involved in this work, Julia Gebel.

Julia completed the German apprenticeship and master craftsman’s diploma in stonecutting and sculpture before moving to Ireland in 2006. Julia joined the OPW in 2008 as a stonemason. She obtained further qualifications in stone conservation in the European Centre for Heritage Crafts and Professions/Italy and academic degrees at LIT and TCD. For her postgraduate thesis she was given the opportunity to develop and implement the stone conservation methodology for Cormac’s Chapel, Rock of Cashel. She established her company Gebel & Helling Conservation Ltd in 2017.

This is a free event, but spaces are limited so we encourage people to get in touch either via social media or by emailing rockofcashel@opw.ie to guarantee a seat.
