Guided tour organised as part of Open House Dublin
An outdoor guided tour canvassing the history of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham from the 7th to the 20th century. Discussing the role and function of the building as a home for predominantly Irish veterans of the British Armed Forces alongside some of the cast of characters that helped shape and form the Royal Hospital into the National Historic Property that it is today.
Alongside the Hospital, there will be a visit to the formal gardens of the site as well, mentioning not only its use but how it changed over time to suit the needs of those at the Royal Hospital.
Meeting point: The central courtyard of the Royal Hospital, beside the “Old Man’s House” exhibition. Please arrive 5 minutes before the tour begins.
You do not need to pre-book this tour.
Accessibility:
The site is mostly wheelchair accessible. However, part of the tour will be in the formal gardens of the grounds which are not wheelchair accessible. The ground is mostly even and cement underfoot but in the central courtyard there are areas of cobblestones which some may have not accessible and one part is on grass
