The Education Team is delighted to offer a Pop-Up Talk this month, focusing on the Neapolitan Crib in the Chapel Royal. Join Tour Guide Stephanie for a insightful exploration of the intricate scenes that make up our version of the Nativity tradition.
The Neapolitan Crib tradition flourished in the 18th century during the reign of King Charles III of Spain (formerly Charles of Bourbon and King of Naples), who owned an extraordinary collection of more than 6,000 crib figures. His enthusiasm inspired members of his court - elevating crib-making to a highly regarded art form. Today, Naples continues to uphold this rich heritage, with skilled artisans creating cribs inspired by their 18th-century predecessors.
Our Neapolitan Crib features three of the four principal elements found in traditional Neapolitan Nativity displays: the Manger, the Tavern, and the Shepherds’ Scene. Crafted in Naples by four master artisans, each component showcases extraordinary skill and attention to detail.  Bruno Perchiazzi designed the architectural setting using wood and cork.  Susy Gatto created the pastori, using wood, wire, and tow for the bodies; terracotta for the heads, hands, and feet; and glass for the eyes.  Sergio Pinfidi produced the lifelike animals.  Lucia Calandro crafted the wax fruit and vegetables.   The celestial hanging angels are the work of Giuseppe Ercolano.
