DUCATION EVENT: THE GREAT ESCAPE TOUR!
The Education Team at Dublin Castle is delighted to offer a series of workshops and tours as part of National Heritage Week 2025.
Join Tour Guide Pat on a tour that explores the escape of Red Hugh O'Donnell from the Record Tower in 1592!
The Record Tower dominates the southwest corner of the Lower Castle Yard, and is one of the most important structures of medieval Dublin to remain today. Dating from the 13th century, the Record Tower has had a variety of names to suit its varying purposes in history. As the Wardrobe Tower, it contained the armour, clothes and treasure belonging to the king. In the 16th century the tower was used to house prisoners (like Red Hugh O’Donnell)! In the 17th century the tower was renamed Gunner’s Tower and served as the headquarters for the Master Gunner of Ireland. Finally the tower was renamed the Record Tower when it was fitted out as a record office where the priceless collection of state papers were stored, before being transferred to the Dublin’s Four Courts on the north quays!
The tour will focus on the month of January in 1592, when Red Hugh O’Donnell (aka the Donegal Prince) made his impressive escape from the Tower after a period of imprisonment.
