Between the 1860s and the 1920s, Sligo Abbey became the setting for a series of striking flag-raising events. Green flags, Boer flags and black flags were raised from the Abbey tower, making the historic site a place of political expression and protest.
This talk explores the flag-raising events and the stories behind them, looking at why Sligo Abbey was repeatedly chosen and how local people and newspapers responded. Based on research published in the OPW Heritage Ireland Journal by local historian and tour guide Melissa Melanephy, the talk offers a glimpse into Sligo’s political and social history during this period.
This is a free event, no booking is required.
