Join us for National Biodiversity week 2026 on Sunday May 24th on Scattery Island where our NPWS warden Carles will be informing visitors all about the island's Hen Harriers who are a rare bird of prey and are a protected species. The males are pale grey with black tips on their wings while the females are brown and much bigger than the males. With less predators Scattery Island provides a safe place for these ground nesting birds. Sometimes home to between 3 and 6 pairs , Scattery is a very important site nationally for the Hen Harrier.
At this time of the year it is highly likely to see sightings in the sky of these magnificent birds of prey.
This talk takes place in conjunction with the island tour of Saint Senan's 6th century monastic settlement given by the OPW guides.
