A close-up view of a detailed patchwork quilt. In the centre is a fox sits in a verdant patchwork green setting. On the left we see the edge of St Brigid's emerald green skirt and chartreuse and fern-green cloak. Her arms are outstretched downwards towards the fox who gazes calmly at her.

An exhibition of Irish textile art featuring  31 Irish textile artists. Presented by the Irish Patchwork Society (IPS).

This national exhibition, presented by the Irish Patchwork Society (IPS), is free, open to the public and runs from 1st to the 29th of February 9.30am to 5pm (Wednesday to Sundays).

The IPS exhibition takes place every two years, this year coincides with St Brigid’s Public Holiday. The challenge for members was to explore and experiment with textiles and stitches to develop small quilt creations inspired by the chosen theme of “A Common Thread: St Brigid”. These pieces showcasing the creativity and talent of IPS members from across the island of Ireland are displayed beautifully in the glorious surrounds of the Phoenix Park Visitor’s Centre.

The exhibition celebrates St Brigid’s inspirational lifetime achievements, her historical legacy, and the creativity of women. St Brigid’s cloak is central to her story and is often depicted as a patchwork reflecting the diversity and inclusiveness of her work and values.

Quilting and patchworking are unique textile art forms which involves intricate needlework, both by hand and machine, to form patterns or pictures in layers of fabric. Both techniques have their origins in traditional craft with a history going back hundreds of years across Europe. The craft also spread to the U.S. and Canada, where Irish and Scottish immigrants brought their handwork skills with them.

More information on the exhibition can be found on the Irish Patchwork Society website.
