Lecture organised as part of Dublin Festival of History
Join National Botanic Gardens guide and historian Joseph Lynch for this Dublin History Festival Lecture exploring the 19th-century applications for kelp and its industrialisation and commercialisation in Ireland.
Seaweed is a widely available and varied natural resource with different species used for many purposes, including food, toiletries, fertilisers, and other chemical applications. The seaweed industry is developing rapidly in the 21st century. This mirrors an explosion in the commercial trade in seaweed in the 19th century – primarily in kelp which was used as a food source, fertiliser and for glass production.
