Carron Ringfort
Carron Ringfort is two km east of Limerick Junction, in Co. Tipperary. Typically ringforts were built predominately in the Early Medieval period, but some have been found to have been built earlier in the Bronze Age and later in the Late Iron Age. Smaller ringforts were typically a farmstead, while some ringforts were constructed as ceremonial sites.
Carron Ringfort is oval in shape, 36m by 32m, with a scarp, fosse, bank, outer fosse and outer bank, meaning Carron ringfort is a trivallate ringfort (if it has three banks or fosses). Trivallate ringforts are less common and believed to have been constructed for those of higher status in society. Carron Ringfort is south of St Berrihert’s Kyle, an ecclesiastical enclosure which contains a variety of stone monuments.
