Larkfield Ringfort
Larkfield ringfort is situated on top of a drumlin, 500m east of the edge of Lough Gowna. This oval shaped ringfort measures internally 38m ENE-WSW and 35.5m NNW to SSE. It has a single outer bank of earth and stone, making it a univallate ringfort. The outer bank however is substantial as it is between 5m to 9m wide with a height ranging from 0.9m to 1.9m. As a result the outer fosse is also wide and deep, between 5.9m to 7m wide and up to 1.65m in depth. The original entrance was to the east of the ringfort.
Larkfield ringfort was an enclosed farmstead, with a possible timber palisade on top of its outer bank. Its location, on the upper east facing slope of the drumlin, together with its east entrance, would have made a raid on Larkfield almost impossible.
