Lisnagowan Ringfort

Lisnagowan Ringfort is one of three ringforts in this area, with Lisnagowan being the largest. This indicates that Lisnagowan Ringfort provided protection to the smaller ringforts surrounding it. The triple line of defence of Lisnagowan includes flat circular summit, 32m by 30m, surrounded by an inner earthen bank to a height of 2.8m. A fosse, from which the earthen banks are made up of, separates the inner bank from the middle bank. The earthen middle bank, with a height of up to 1.5m, is separated from the outer bank by another fosse. The outer bank with a width of 5.3m by 7m, has an external height of 2.8m. A further fosse lies immediately outside the outer bank. Lisnagowan Ringfort is known as a multivallate, due to the number of banks it has. The entrance to the ringfort was at the SSE. Ringforts date to the Early Medieval period into the Late Iron Age.
