Heritage Ireland

Testimonials

Our Guides represent the public face of the OPW, showcasing Ireland’s most important heritage sites. The Guide Service plays a vital role in conserving and presenting selected sites and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the visitors.

Heritage Guides provide unique and memorable experiences for visitors from all over the world. It is a rewarding and enjoyable job for those who enjoy sharing their expertise and enthusiasm with others.

KILMAINHAM GAOL

Working as an OPW guide is a unique job. You have the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and from countries all over the world. We help bring history and heritage to life and provide memorable experiences to our local and international visitors. Working in some of Ireland’s most important and iconic heritage sites, guides also have the opportunity to learn and develop new life skills: public speaking, customer service, event management, cash handling, research and general administration. While no two days as an OPW guide are the same, all days can offer exciting and rewarding experiences.

ROCK OF CASHEL

I joined the team at the Rock of Cashel on 1 June 2023. It was a very interesting and enjoyable experience giving guided tours to people from all over the world. It gave me a great sense of pride in our unique Irish heritage and I was delighted to get the opportunity to share the history, archaeology, and mythology of this important site.

I wanted to get in touch to say thanks to all your staff who were very kind to myself and my family on our recent visit on Tuesday, April 22nd. My 82 year old Dad had been speaking about Newgrange a lot in recent times and expressing regret that he had never been. I brought him as a birthday gift and your staff were so kind and considerate, it made his day.

The lady who dealt with us at reception was just so lovely and looked after us beautifully.  The guide at Knowth was fantastic and I believe it was her first day, and the guide at Newgrange was knowledgeable and kind too. The bus driver was professional and made us so welcome. In fact, everyone we encountered made us, but Dad in particular, feel so welcome & special which really made his day and added to his experience.

I know we often only hear from the people/customers who are unhappy so I wanted to made the effort to show how much the staff at Newgrange made a special day even more special.

Dad hates travelling abroad and he is now on a journey with dementia, so days like that are even more precious. The memories we have of our visit may not stay with him for many years but they will stay with myself & my daughters – who kindly came to help me mind their grandparents and enjoy the day with them.

Please pass on my deepest thanks to your staff and let them know that they may not always hear it back, but they are part of precious memories for all who visit your wonderful exhibit.
