Aghaward Ringfort
Aghaward ringfort has a raised circular area with a diameter of 30m, which is enclosed by a bank of earth and stone to a height of 1.7m. An outer fosse or ditch, from which the bank was built, has a depth of up to 1.9m. The presence of an outer fosse indicates the ringfort was well protected as any attacker would need to go down into the fosse, climb up the bank and then face a timber palisade, as well as those defending the ringfort. The original entrance to Aghaward ringfort is not discernible.
Aghaward ringfort is strategically situated close to several nearby springs and tributaries of the River Camlin, providing fresh water to the families and animals who once lived within the ringfort. Aghaward ringfort is also south facing, maximising the sun, ideal for growing crops, and providing light in the evening.
