Kildavnet Castle
Kildavnet Castle is a four-storey 15th century tower house overlooking Achill Sound.
With stunning views over the water and hills, it is not hard to see why the O’Malley clan had their castle built in this location.
Remnants of a bawn wall can still be found nearby, used as a defensive feature around the castle.
Kildavnet is also known as Carrickkildavnet, and locally as Granuaile’s Tower. The castle is closely associated with Grace O’Malley, the famous Pirate Queen of Ireland. Though the castle was built before her time, it was likely built by her ancestors. It is said that she is now buried on Clare Island.
