About the Custom House

Built under heavy controversy, and burned down during the war of independence, the Custom House Visitor Centre explores the rich history of an architectural triumph, while encompassing over 230 years of Irish history.

Opened in November 2021, the Custom House Visitor Centre reveals the stories behind the building, burning and restoration of this iconic Dublin landmark.

Unearth stories of political scandal, rebellion and tragedy. Stories which not only shaped the history of the building, but of Ireland.

Take in the architectural beauty of James Gandon’s designs, and admire the many statues that adorn the exterior, including Edward Smyth’s 14 riverine heads
