The Pearse Brothers

Across the continent with Mrs. Margaret Pearse- Mrs. Pearse’s American Tour, 1924.

This exhibition tells the story of Mrs. Margaret Pearse's cross-country tour of the United States to raise money for St. Enda’s College between April and October 1924. She also spoke at rallies and meetings held in support of the Irish republican movement and its leader, Éamon de Valera. As the mother of one of the best-known executed leaders of the 1916 Rising, Mrs. Pearse was able to use her high profile to raise support and money among Irish Americans for de Valera and the Irish republican election fund.

The lecture tour began in New York and Philadelphia where large audiences turned out to hear Mrs. Pearse speak. At the end of June Mrs. Pearse headed to Boston and New England. She was accompanied by Anna Smith, a schoolteacher from Brooklyn who travelled with her and assisted her on an epic journey which took them across continental America, down the West Coast and then back across the country to New York. Smith also documented their travels in photographs and an illustrated diary. These remarkable photos of her journey form the basis of a new exhibition at the Pearse Museum which tells the story of Mrs. Pearse and her remarkable American Journey
