Exterior of Farmleigh House

Farmleigh House is an interesting example of built heritage. Constructed in the mid-18th century as a modest private residence, it changed hands many times before becoming the rustic retreat of the distinguished Guinness family and finally Ireland’s formal State Guesthouse.

The tour traces the evolution of a modest six roomed residential property into a Guinness family home then moves onto its current iteration as Ireland’s formal State Guesthouse.
We explore Farmleigh House’s neo classical influences, consider the modifications undertaken during the Guinness era and illustrate how Edward and Adelaide’s personal interests are reflected in the mix of stylistic influences and artefacts that blend to generate an exceptionally charming and eclectic interior.
Edward and Adelaide Guinness sought to and succeeded in creating a genial and impressive residence and their legacy remains intact as today Farmleigh House continues to provide a warm gracious and impressive welcome to Guests of the Nation.
