Ormond Castle from above

Taking place on June 7th from 11am-12.30pm, this is a unique opportunity to learn about Secretary Hand (or script), a style of handwriting that was developed in the early sixteenth century, and commonly use in the Elizabethan era.

Join Bridget McCormack, Archivist and OPW guide at Ormond Castle, who will explain the Secretary Hand alphabet, offering attendees a guided opportunity to work with it in an easy and accessible way.

Bridget will also present and decipher a letter from the Ormond Castle collection, received by Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond, from Queen Mary 1 of England, thanking him for his services to The Crown. Written in 1557, it is fine example of Secretary Hand from that period.

This is a free event, and booking is essential.
