Dublin Castle has opened a new exhibition celebrating the diversity of sculptor Imogen Stuart’s remarkable career.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) is delighted to host the exhibition IMOGEN, a celebration of Imogen Stuart’s long career spanning more than 7 decades.

Born in Germany in 1927 she moved to Ireland in 1948 where she carved out a career that has made her one of Ireland’s foremost sculptors. It is her ecclesiastical commission work for which she is best known, her expressive work trail-blazed ecclesiastical statuary in the 1950’s and continues to stand apart with its unique and instantly recognizable style. Her works are intercultural, greatly influenced by German expressionism and Romanesque style, and are also representative of native Irish art, culture and beliefs.

This exhibition highlights the diverse range and breadth of Imogen Stuart’s output and the important contribution she has made to the development of Irish sculpture in the 20th and 21st century.  Her outstanding feeling for her materials and her ability to respond to them can clearly be seen in the 60 small and medium scale works on display here in wood, stone, marble, bronze, cast iron and also on paper dating from 1947 to the present day.

Imogen Stuart is excited to have this exhibition in Dublin and said, “I am so happy to have my work on display in the beautiful Coach House Gallery here in Dublin Castle”
