Eddie Kennedy was born in Thurles, County Tipperary, in 1960. He graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design in 1983. He received his Masters in Fine Art at the University of Cincinnati in 1989. Having spent some years painting in New York and working with US artist Ron Gorchov, he now lives and works in Dublin and Mayo. In 2017 he received the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award and was elected to membership of Aosdána.
The Frontier exhibition takes inspiration from masters such as Seamus Heaney, T.S Elliot, Phillip Guston and US sculptor Bill Freeland. Kennedy sees the activity of painting as an altered state of perception, as T.S Elliot explains 'each venture is a new beginning, a raid on the inarticulate'. Seamus Heaney also gives words to Kennedy's perception of painting, articulating the process as 'pre-verbal, able to allow the first alertness or come hither, sensed in a blurred or incomplete way, to dilate and approach as a thought or a phrase'.
In a rare and recent interview with the painter Frank Auerbach, when asked how he thought of his work, looking back over his long painting life, he stated that it wasn’t up to him to judge them, but that looking back on them now, from a distance, he was satisfied that he had been “working on his own frontier”.I find this poetic understanding of the endeavour to make paintings both thrilling and hugely liberating and absolutely true. The unrelenting search for authenticity I had in mind Frontier as the title of this exhibition in Rathfarnam Castle as I’ve been preparing for it over many months.
