For hundreds of Years Clonmacnoise stood as an important religious, economic and intellectual hub at the ancient cross roads of Ireland. The monastery’s role as a burial site for various Kings inspired the famous poetic line “the Warriors of Erin in their famous generations slumber there”
Between 1880 and 1966 a lesser known but important story occurred at Clonmacnoise. As it ruins played host to agitation, propaganda battles, burial and commemoration.
A presentation featuring the stories of political meetings, a flying column leader secretly buried and almost immediately disinterred and three 1916 veterans buried at Clonmacnoise.
