An abstract painting

Catherine Ward is an Irish artist from Dublin working with painting, photography and drawing. Her work is inspired by landscapes marked by human interventions. In ‘What Remains’, she visits historic mining landscapes such as Avoca in the Wicklow mountains. Using aerial perspective, Ward documents the effects of the local mining industry on the land. She is interested in the patterns, shapes and traces of what is left behind after mines and quarries are closed.

Drawing from photographic material, on-site sketches and found film material, Ward combines different sources to create the basis for her paintings. By using differing brush strokes and complementary colours, there is a sense of both presence and absence; the recognisable and the abstract. She also collects and uses pigments from the mine sites such as yellow ochre. The paintings capture the vibrant, unnatural colours that are indicative of a landscape in a state of precarity.

This exhibition is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland.
