Loher Ringfort
With the Farraniaragh Mountains as its backdrop, and a view over Ballinskelligs Bay, looking out towards Sceilg Mhichíl, Loher Ringfort is situated in one of the most picturesque locations in Ireland.
This restored ringfort was likely a defended farmstead, and the remains of two drystone-built houses still exist within the interior of the fort – one rectangular in shape, the other circular. The entrance to a souterrain can be found within the circular house.
Excavations carried out on the site in the 1980s revealed that previous structures existed prior to the two houses still remaining today.
Surrounding rocks near the site were found to contain the carvings of cupmarks, which likely pre-date the ringfort itself, as cupmarks are well-known artistic features of the Neolithic period.
