Rathealy Ringfort
Rathealy Ringfort sits on a ridge between two parallel valleys. It has a raised oval area surrounded by a broad earthen bank and fosse. It is a trivallate ringfort in that it has a further brace of external earthen banks and associated fosses. The interior oval area, accessed from the east, has the remains of four rectangular buildings within. The building identified to the north, measuring 5m N-S; 10m E-W, had its north and west walls built into the first broad earthen bank. Its south wall was shared with the building immediately to its south. This building, measuring 15m N-S; 5m E-W is the largest of the buildings and is centrally located within the Rathealy Ringfort. The building at the southern-most point of the ringfort has its south wall conjoined with the broad earthen bank. To its east is the fourth building and it too has its south wall built into the broad earthen bank. Due to the overall size and complexity of the site it is classified as a castle ringwork.
