Ross Castle Highlights (4)
Take a Guided Tour
Enjoy one of our guided tours and discover what life was like in a fifteenth-century tower house. Hear the story of the castle’s first chieftain, O’Donoghue Mór, who, legend has it, still slumbers under the waters of the lake. Every seven years, on the first morning in May, he rises on his magnificent white horse. If you manage to catch a glimpse of him you will enjoy good fortune for the rest of your life.
Fine Furnishings
Admire the fine sixteenth- and seventeenth-century furniture and sumptuous tapestries on display in the castle. View our realistic model of a tower house in the exhibition room.
Ingenious Defences
Watch out for the various ingenious defensive features throughout the building and learn how they would have been used. It isn’t hard to see how Ross Castle became the last place in Munster to hold out against Cromwell in the seventeenth century.
Stunning Setting
Admire the stunning setting on the shore of Lough Leane, in the fabulous surroundings of Killarney National Park. Take a boat trip across the lake and view the castle’s imposing outline against the distant mountain landscape.
