Ferns Castle

Step into the story of Ferns through the needles and skills of the local community who created one of its most treasured artefacts.

The Ferns Tapestry is a remarkable 15-metre community masterpiece of crewel embroidery. Its 25 colourful panels bring to life the rich history of this ancient place — from the arrival of St Aidan in 598 AD and the early monastic settlement, through Viking raids and the turbulent career of Diarmait Mac Murchada, to the coming of the Normans in 1169, with glimpses of later life in the town.

During Heritage Week, meet some of the makers themselves. Hear the stories behind the stitches, learn about the ancient craft of crewel work, and discover how a community project became a lasting gift to Ferns and all who visit.
Come along, chat with the stitchers, and see this extraordinary tapestry up close.
