The building is thought to be one of the first of its kind in Ireland and the designer drew heavily on continental, Renaissance-period thinking about design and building form. Much later a series of fine, eighteenth-century interiors designed by Sir William Chambers and James ‘Athenian’ Stuart were inserted into the building.
