The Living History Exhibition
The stone walls of the Abbey will be lined with the written stories captured by the children. Visitors will be able to walk through and read first-hand accounts of:
Local Folklore & Legends: Mythological tales, fairy lore, and old Sligo superstitions passed down through families.
Memories of Yesteryear: Personal accounts of what schooling, work, and daily life in Sligo looked like generations ago.
Family Traditions: Unique customs and histories that define local families.
What Heritage Means to Me" Gallery
Alongside the written words, the exhibition will feature a vibrant gallery of student artwork. Children were asked to visually express their connection to history, resulting in a colourful, creative display of how the youth of 2026 views their roots.
During the event, details will be shared regarding the permanent "Save Our Stories" Digital Archive. This ensures that once the physical exhibition concludes, the voices, memories, and artwork collected will be preserved online as a permanent resource for future historians and genealogists.
Why This Event is Special
This event transforms Sligo Abbey from a monument of the past into a living, breathing community hub. By showcasing the children's work during Heritage Week, the event honours both the older citizens who held these memories and the young students who took the time to rescue them from being forgotten. It is a true celebration of community, continuity, and Sligo pride.
