A sprig of blackthorn flows across the image, with a pathway and trees visible in the background. The blackthorn is in bloom, with bright white flowers. It is not in leaf (leaves come after flowers) and it has dark, almost black, wood, with thin, sharp thorns.

Discover the many tales associated with St. Patrick and discover more about the folklore of some of our best known native species.

As days exceed nights and spring wakes the Gardens, celebrate the Spring Equinox and St Patrick’s Festival with a guided tour on all things Irish! Meet native plants both strange and familiar, and hear tell of the legends woven around them. Explore how the flora of Ireland’s landscape has been linked to folklore over the centuries, weaving signs of nature into songs and stories.
