This autumn, the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection can be seen upstream the Boyne river at Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre – Oldbridge Estate in Olbridge House.
The exhibition Upstream: Highlanes Visits Oldbridge is an exhibition of selected work from the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection exploring the history, diversity and richness of the region with the river Boyne as a constant presence.
In this year of celebration of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection by Bea Orpen and Terry Trench, and the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Highlanes Gallery, the municipal art gallery for Drogheda and the North East, this exhibition reflects one of the core strands of the Collection, landscape, place, Drogheda and the river Boyne.
The exhibition includes some iconic works in the collection including Robert Armstrong’s sepia wash drawing – The Bathe House (1823), L.S. Lowry’s Drogheda, 1970, Bea Orpen’s View of Baltray and Rose-Marie Martin-Blanchet’s Cottage Along the Boyne, a number of Laurence Fagan’s work including The Boyne Viaduct, Drogheda, The Magdalen Tower, St Mary’s Bridge, Drogheda, and Mellifont Abbey, and Simon Coleman’s View of Drogheda from Highfield. There are a number of recent acquisitions by contemporary artists including Vivienne Byrne, Gillian Cullen and Richard Moore. The exhibition set within three rooms of the 18th century Olbdridge House within the site of the Battle of the Boyne (1690)
Upstream: Highlanes Visits Oldbridge is curated by Highlanes Gallery’s Community Curatorial Panel – Robin Barnes, Bairbre English, John English, Eithne Hamill, Martin Kierans, Kay Mc Quaile, Oisín Ó Maoláin, Máire Uí Mhaoláin.
