Coolcoulaghta Standing Stones
The Coolcoulaghta Standing Stones are a pair of standing stones forming a stone row and National Monument located in County Cork.
These ancient stones stand in a field approximately 3.2 kilometers (2.0 miles) southwest of Durrus. Their origins likely date back to the Bronze Age period, and they may have served various purposes, including astronomical observation. Interestingly, the alignment of these stones points toward the nearby Dunbeacon stone circle, located approximately 400 meters (¼ mile) to the west.
Although the exact purpose of standing stones remains unclear, they may have functioned as boundary markers, ritual or ceremonial sites, burial sites, or even astrological alignments. The Coolcoulaghta Standing Stones, with their enigmatic history, continue to captivate and evoke a sense of wonder about our ancient past.
