Derryvella Monastic Settlement
Nestled in the lush landscapes of County Tipperary, the Early Medieval Ecclesiastical Site of Derryvella stands as a testament to a bygone era. This hallowed site echoes with the stories of its rich past and spiritual heritage.
Founded in the mid-7th century AD, Derryvella, also known as Daire Mór, was the heart of a flourishing Christian monastery. Some historians link it to Daire Mór, the "great oakwood", established by Colmán of Derrymore. Others suggest that Derryvella is Doire Meille, connected with Tigernach of Clones, and is reputedly Ireland's second-oldest churchyard.
Now a National Monument, the site is marked by a circular enclosure, spanning 150 metres north-south and 125 metres east-west. It stands as a silent tribute to the unwavering faith and dedication of the early Christian monks who once called it home.
In the present day, Derryvella provides a unique portal to the past once trodden by early Christian monks.
