Killeen Cowpark Church

Killeen-Cowpark Church is located just 5km from the town of Askeaton and its medieval castle and friary. Local folklore has it that the church was one of three churches that were built by three sisters (the others being the nearby churches of Cappagh and Beagh). However, no builder or founding saint’s name is recalled.

The name of the church, Killeen, comes from the Irish ‘cillín’ which simply means ‘a small church’. The church is built of local limestone and dates to approximately the 15th century. A “base-batter” sloping around the exterior perimeter appears to have been added after the original construction. There is a gothic entrance door and three narrow widows decorated with an ogee / ‘double curve’ point at the top. There is an ornate belfry on the exterior of the western gable. The church originally had a wooden roof, and the stone corbels which supported this can still be seen inside the church. Killeen-Cowpark Church was used as a regular place of worship until 1811.
