Brian Boru’s Fort
Brian Boru’s fort is a large ringfort which can be found between the River Shannon and the Killaloe-Tuamgraney road. This ringfort was the seat of one of Ireland’s most infamous High Kings from 1002 until his death in 1014.
Excavations carried out in 1961 have provided us with an indication as to how it once appeared. The fortification was high in stature with a retaining stone wall and an external wooden stake fence. It was surrounded by a defensive ditch and the fort was built on a spur overlooking the river Shannon. During Boru’s reign, he reinforced the fort to make it a strong base from which to control the river.
Brian Boru’s ringfort was raided and destroyed in 1116. What remains today are its high banks, deep ditch, and raised centre with sunken interior.
