Killulta Church
Killulta church, located 1.6km from Kildimo Village near Glennameade in County Limerick, is reputed to be one of the oldest surviving churches in Ireland and has been dated to the 9th century, but is possibly even earlier.
The local place name, and the name of the church, are both Killulta, which translates to “The Church of the Ulstermen” or “The Church of Saint Últan” in old Irish. The church is built of local limestone and is quite small in size with the interior measuring just 5 X 3 metres. The walls of the church are approximately 1 metre thick. Killulta Church has a rectangular entrance door in its western gable and a small triangular window above where the altar would have been at the eastern end.
